Thelonious Monk was one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz.  Born in October 1917, the great composer and pianist first established his jazz career when he joined the house band at Minton's Playhouse.  He recorded extensively for the Blue Note label and worked with many other jazz greats ( Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and many more).  He received numerous awards during his lifetime and was and still is greatly admired for his work as both a composer and pianist.  His compositions remain an inspiration to musicians worldwide.
