The Newport Jazz Festival was inaugurated in 1954. Nothing like it had been seen before and it quickly became a huge success attracting bigger and bigger crowds. With that success came problems, and in 1960, the bubble burst. There was resentment toward what was perceived as the festival's conservative, and increasingly commercial booking policy by a significant number of jazz musicians who were pushing the boundaries of the art form.
Max Roach and Charles Mingus, both displaying great fortitude, decided to organize their own "Rebel Festival." The "Anti-Newport Festival", if you will.
Sadly the Festival went unrecorded. But intrepid Candid producer, Nat Hentoff was able to gather many of the participants at a studio in New York that November 1960 and to some extent, re-create the event.
Collected here are the Charles Mingus group cuts. You'll find more music from these sessions on the Candid release Newport Rebels.
Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Ted Curson, Paul Bley, Dannie Richmond, Roy Eldridge, Jimmy Knepper, Tommy Flanagan
