How Time Passes

Don Ellis

BUY / LISTEN

The debut album from the envelope pushing trumpeter and composer Don Ellis.

Ellis began his long career in the New York City’s post bop and avant-garde jazz scenes of late 1950s, appearing on Charles Mingus’ Mingus Dynasty, and albums by George Russell and Maynard Feguson.

On subsequent albums, Ellis would take a decidedly wilder direction, even embracing Third Stream (a fusion of jazz and classical), and even psychedelia.  And here, on his first recoding date as a band leader, one can hear the foreshadowing of the experimentation to come, stretching the boundaries of bop-based jazz and experimenting with time and tempo.

Recorded by Candid A&R man and founder Nat Hentoff in at the Nola Penthouse Studios, New York City in October 1960.

Don Ellis, Ron Carter, Charlie Pereip, Jaki Byard
