Art Hodes belongs to a generation which learnt from men like Jimmy Yancey, Earl Hines, Jelly Roll and James P Johnson, pianists who did not lean on bassists of drummers but aimed at being self-propelling, self contained, self sufficient.
Throughout the 1920s, Art was right there, growing up in Chicago in the heartland of the burgeoning new music that was sweeping America. He was perfectly at ease on the South Side. However, nearly twenty years were to pass before his own reputation spread outside the Windy City. His move to New York sparked a new career that made him an ardent propagandist for early jazz.
His playing graced countless record sessions over the decades and this album, (together with Pagin' Mr Jelly, Candid CCD 79037) was one of the last he made.
Now sadly, Art is keeping out of mischief permanently, but he will long have a place in the heart of every true jazz lover.
