Max Roach is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential jazz drummers and composers of all time and largely credited as one of the innovators of bebop. Alongside his work in the new bop movement which sought to break free from the constraints and conventions of the time, Roach became a prominent force in the civil rights movement.
This album is a compilation of takes from original Candid Records sessions produced by A&R man and founder Nat Hentoff between 1960 and 1961. Including ‘Freedom Day’ from Roach’s masterpiece We Insist! as well as ‘When Malindy Sings’ from Abbey Lincoln’s breakout album, Straight Ahead.
