Although the Mosaic box set of Mingus' work claims to have all the Charles Mingus Candid recordings, this album, in addition to four duplications from that box, contains three alternate takes not included anywhere else. "Body and Soul" (featuring trumpeter Roy Eldridge and altoist Eric Dolphy), the Dannie Richmond drum solo "Melody from the Drums" and a septet runthrough on "Reincarnation of a Love Bird."
All of these recordings were made with Nat Hentoff in fall of 1960. Together these tracks make a fine introduction to the music of Charles Mingus.
