Donald Harrison is one of finest saxophonists of his generation. His resume includes long associations with Terrance Blanchard and Art Blakey throughout the 1980s. But the foundation of Harrison's music comes from his lifelong participation in culture of New Orleans, his home town.
Here he pays tribute to that culture, and accompanying him on this journey is nonother than the legendary Dr. John. Both artists, the embodiment of New Orleans’ music in their own right.
The two came together with Harrison’s band in New York City in May of 1991 to cut a record. Those sessions resulted in the album Indian Blues (also available on Candid Records). But the sessions also yielded this recording - A live set at New York’s storied jazz club, Birdland. Whether these were after hour jam sessions, or warm ups before heading into the studio for late night recording, we just don’t know. Both records also feature the great Cyrus Chestnut on keys.
Donald Harrison Jr., Dr. John, Carl Allen, Dwayne Burno, Stephen Scotts, Smiley Ricks
