In protest against what they considered the accelerating commercialization of the annual Newport Jazz Festival, Charles Mingus and Max Roach gathered their collective of avant-garde jazz artists and set up a Newport rebellion concert. The "Anti-Newport" festival, if you will.
Most of the artists involved formed the Jazz Artists Guild, and intended to produce more concerts as well as recordings. One result, was this album. Despite the fact that these sessions were held in a studio, the music reflected the high-spirited freedom of the best jazz played at the original setting because nearly all of it was improvised during the recording.
Recorded by Candid A&R man and founder Nat Hentoff at the Nola Penthouse Studios in November of 1960. You'll find more cuts from these sessions on the Candid Charles Mingus album, Charles Mingus And The Newport Rebels.
