Recorded by Candid A&R man and founder Nat Hentoff at the Nola Penthouse Studios in New York City in April of 1961, but not released until 1988. This is Don Ellis’ second recording session as a band leader.
Ellis began his long career in the New York City’s post bop and avant-garde jazz scenes of late 1950s, appearing on Charles Mingus’ Mingus Dynasty, and albums by George Russell and Maynard Feguson.
On subsequent albums, Ellis would take a decidedly wilder direction, embracing Third Stream (a fusion of jazz and classical), and even psychedelia. Though the material chosen for this date are standards, Ellis’ readings are anything but routine or predictable.
Don Ellis, Steve Swallow, Paul Blew
