As luck and good judgement would have it, 1960 was the year that Mingus had one of his most extraordinary and innovative groups. It was also the only time of Mingus' band-leading existence that he was able to spend nearly ten months in residence at a single club, New York's The Showplace.
It's easy to imagine what this did for the unity and adventurousness of the group. And it proved to be a benefit that two sessions for Candid were scheduled just at the point where the Showplace nightclub residency had come to an abrupt end.
These sessions were record by Candid Records A&R man and founder Nat Hentoff at the Nola Penthouse in New York City in November of 1960, but remained unreleased until 1988.
