The material here was cut during the sessions for Spann's classic debut album, Otis Spann Is The Blues (also on Candid Records.) Recorded by Candid Records A&R man and founder Nat Hentoff in 1960 in New York City. This was just a few weeks after Spann had made a considerable impression on the jazz community at the Newport Jazz Festival, where he was performing with the legendary Muddy Waters.
Spann is widely considered one of the greatest blues pianists ever. These tracks were left on the cutting room floor and finally saw official release in 1972, two years after his death.
